TEA BLENDS

CLEANSING TEA

Burdock (Arctium lappa)

Actions

Alterative, diuretic, bitter, laxative, tonic, vulnerary, adaptogen, hepatic, anti-fungal, lymphatic, diaphoretic, hypoglycaemic, orexigenic.

Uses

Arthritis, gout, rheumatism, boils, styes, seborrhoea, cystitis, anaemia, anorexia nervosa.

·         One of the most powerful and reliable blood tonics of herbalism.

·         To lower blood sugar.

·         Skin diseases, especially psoriasis, acne, eczema.

·         To reduce cholesterol level.

·         Aids digestion and appetite.

·         Aids kidney function.

·         Moves body to state of health.

Contraindications:  Not used in pregnancy or lactation.

 

Dandelion Root & Leaf (Taraxacum officinalis)

Actions

A powerful diuretic, bitter tonic, pancreatic regulator, galactagogue, cholagogue, anti-rheumatic, pancreatic and bile duct stimulant, stimulant to portal circulation, laxative (mild), urinary antiseptic, anti-eczema, detoxicant, choleretic.

Uses

Liver disorders, inflammation of gall bladder – counters tendency to form gall stones, mild jaundice – clear yellowish complexion and to brighten the eyes; to stimulate flow of bile.  Indigestion, lack of appetite, muscular rheumatism, hypoglycaemia, anorexia nervosa, wasting diseases, warts, infective hepatitis.

·         Powerful diuretic and one of the best natural sources of potassium – synthetic diuretics cause loss of potassium.

·         Rich in nutrient minerals.

·         Promotes elimination of plasma cholesterol.

·         Fluid retention of heart origin.

Yellow Dock (Rumex crispus)

Actions

General alterative tonic, bitter, laxative, lymphatic, cholagogue, hepatic.

Uses

·         Disorders of spleen, lymphatic glands, to promote flow of bile in liver congestion and jaundice.

·         Mineral rich.

·         Contains sulphur – of value in chronic skin conditions.

·         Roots possess the property to attract iron from the soil which is transmuted into organic iron in the plant tissues.  Therefore, herb is a blood enricher for the treatment of simple iron-deficiency anaemia.

·         Used extensively in chronic, dry itchy skin eruptions, boils, shingles, psoriasis.

·         Rheumatism, ulcers of the mouth (mouthwash).

·         Valuable remedy for constipation.

 

Nettles (Urtica dioica)

Actions

Astringent, tonic, diuretic, alterative, rubefacient, blood tonic, antiseptic, circulatory stimulant, amphoteric, lowers high blood pressure and blood sugar, re-mineraliser, anti-rheumatic.

Uses

·         One of the most widely applicable plants

·         Strengthens and support the whole body.

Plantain (Plantago major)

Actions

Expectorant, demulcent, astringent, diuretic, externally emollient and vulnerary; anti-histamine, anti-bacterial, anti-allergy, blood tonic, lymphatic, anti-haemorrhagic, antacid.

Uses

Chronic blood disorders, shingles, neuralgic remedy, diabetes, fever, kidney and bladder disorders, irritable bowel, diverticulosis, ulcers, internal/external bleeding – excess menstrual loss, hyperacidity, bronchitis, bruises, skin eruptions and disorders, wounds that refuse to heal, cystitis with blood.

·         One of the most versatile herbs.

·         Rich source of minerals.

·         All body tissues feel its beneficial influence.

 

Red Clover (Trifolium pratense)

Actions

Expectorant, anti-spasmodic, alterative, sedative, anti-inflammatory, anti-neoplastic, lymphatic.

Uses

Mouth ulcers and sore throat, skin diseases:  scrofula, eczema, old sores that refuse to heal; TB:  cough and night sweats; whooping cough, bronchitis in children.

·         Mild stimulating and relaxing alterative with affinity for throat and salivary glands.

·         Reputed anti-neoplastic for reduction of tumors and hard swellings, especially of ovaries and breast.

·         Long traditional reputation as a drink for cleansing the lymphatic vessels through which cancer is believed to spread.

 

Ginger (Zingiber officinale)

Actions

Anti-inflammatory, carminative, anti-spasmodic, expectorant, vasodilator, anti-cholesterol, anti-emetic, diaphoretic. 

Uses

Keynote:  Diffusive stimulant.

Travel sickness, flatulent colic, irritable bowel and diarrhea – where no inflammation exists, colds and flu – to promote perspiration and thus reduce body temperature; cold hand and feet, hypothermia, brain fatigue, general weakness, nausea and vomiting, morning sickness of pregnancy, sickness of chemotherapy and after surgical operation.

·         Traditional ingredient in prescriptions to ensure absorption through the stomach to all parts of the body.

·         Stimulant of the peripheral circulation.

Contraindications:  In kidney disease.  Best taken with food.

 

Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra)

Actions

Anti-depressive, expectorant, demulcent, anti-inflammatory, adrenal agent (restorative), anti-spasmodic, mild laxative, emollient, pectoral, tonic

Uses

Adrenal insufficiency, hypo-glycaemia, inflamed stomach, peptic ulcer, duodenal ulcer, respiratory infections:  dry cough, lung troubles, TB; prevents urinary tract infections

·         One of a group of plants that has a marked effect upon the endocrine system.

·         Chemicals present have a structure similar to the natural steroids of the body.  Therefore, Licorice has a beneficial action of the treatment of adrenal gland problems.

·         Wide use in bronchial problems such as catarrh, bronchitis and coughs in general.

·         Used as treatment for gastritis and stomach ulcers.  Relieves abdominal colic.

Contraindications:  Pregnancy, cirrhosis of the liver, and in the presence of digitalis

 

Fennel Seeds (Foeniculum vulgare)

Actions

A gentle warming agent for delicate stomachs, carminative, aromatic, anti-spasmodic, digestive, orexigenic, rubefacient, diuretic (soothing), galactagogue, mild stimulant, anti-inflammatory, anti-coagulant, microbial, expectorant, estrogen-effect.

Uses

·         To disperse windy colic in infants, griping, to arouse appetite, sweeten a sour stomach.

·         Soothe irritable bowel.

·         Increases milk in nursing mother.

·         Obesity.

·         Seeds contain an important essential oil.

·         Calming effect on bronchitis and coughs.

Contraindications:  Side effect (rare) – large doses may bring on slight return of periods in menopausal women.

Chickweed (Stellaria media)

Actions

Alterative, demulcent, emollient, vulnerary, anti-itch, anti-rheumatic, laxative (mild), refrigerant – cools, soothes and relieves irritation.

Uses

·        Ancient remedy for chronic skin conditions.  Boils, painful eruptions, varicose ulcers, abscess, etc.

·        Muscular rheumatism, inflamed joints.

·        Takes heart out of itchy skin.

·        Most common use – external remedy for cuts, wounds and especially for itching and irritation.

 

Clivers (Galium aperine)

Actions

Lymphatic alterative and detoxifier, diuretic, astringent tonic, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory, anti-obesity, adaptogen, anti-neoplastic. 

Uses

·        Enlarged lymph nodes, especially cervical neck nodes, cystic and nodular changes in the gland.

·        Dry skin disorders – psoriasis, etc.

·        Urinary disorders:  suppression, painful, irritable bladder.

·        Stone – solvent.

·        Very valuable plant – perhaps best tonic to lymphatic system available.

·        Swollen glands – tonsilitis, adenoids.

 

Motherwort (Leonurus cardiaca)

Actions

Anti-spasmodic, laxative, diaphoretic, emmenogogue, vaso-constrictor, nerve and heart sedative, hypotensive, cardiotonic.

Uses

Angina on effort, simple uncomplicated heart conditions to enhance exercise duration; tachycardia from hyperactive thyroid, hypertension, absent or painful menstruation, menopausal flushes, PMS.

·        Relevance to menstrual and uterine conditions.

·        Heart and circulation treatments.

·        Relaxing tonic for aiding menopausal changes.

·        Excellent tonic for heart conditions that are associated with anxiety and tension.

·        Needs to be taken for weeks.

Contraindications:  Not given in pregnancy.

Oat Straw (Avena sativa)

Uses

·        Nutrient with selective action of the brain and nerve cells.

·        Source of minerals.

·        Improves performance and stamina.

·        One of the best remedies for feeding and strengthening the nervous system, especially when under stress; nervous debility and exhaustion when associated with depression; general debility.

Peppermint (Mentha piperita)

DIGESTIVE TEA

Meadowsweet (Filipendula ulmaria)

Actions

Anti-rheumatic, anti-inflammatory, stomachic, anti-emetic, astringent, aromatic, antacid, antiseptic, diuretic, hepatic, mild urinary analgesic, anti-coagulant

Uses

One of the best digestive remedies; protects and soothes mucous membranes of the digestive tract; reduces excess acidity, eases nausea and heartburn.  Provides relief from gastric and peptic ulcers.  Reduces fever and relieves pain of rheumatism in muscles and joints.  Has aspirin effect on blood vessels.

 

Lime Blossom (Tilia cordata)

Actions

Nervine, anti-spasmodic, sedative, diaphoretic, diuretic, mild astringent, tonic, hypotensive, anti-coagulant, immune enhancer

Uses

A relaxing remedy for nervous tension; guards against development of arteriosclerosis and hypertension; treatment of some forms of migraine due to its relaxing action combined with a general effect upon the circulatory system, aids digestion and insomnia.  Provides relief of early stages of flu, colds and fevers.

 

Peppermint (Mentha piperita)

Actions

Digestive, carminative, anti-spasmodic, diaphoretic, anti-emetic, mild sedative, peripheral vasodilator, stimulant, nervine

Uses

Colitis, Crohn’s Disease, fever, colds; eases anxiety, tension and pain.

 

Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis)

Actions

Anti-spasmodic, antidepressant, anti-histamine, anti-stress, anti-flatulent, febrifuge, mild tranquilliser, nerve relaxant, heart-sedating effect.

Uses

Lemon Balm is an excellent carminative herb.  It relieves spasms in the digestive tract and relieves nausea and heartburn or flatulent dyspepsia which is acute, non-recurring indigestion that may be caused by overeating, excessive alcohol, rapid eating and/or irregular eating habits.  Relieves tension and stress and has a tonic effect on the heart and the circulatory system, thus lowering blood pressure.  It can be used in feverish conditions such as the flu.  Externally is cleansing, antiseptic, fragrant and soothing to skin.  May be used as a compress for headaches and nervousness and is anti-rheumatic in ointments and baths.

FLU & COLD TEA 

Echinacea (Echinacea angustifolia)

Actions

Anti-microbial, alterative, anti-catarrhal, tonic, antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, detoxicant, parasiticide, antibiotic, vasodilator, lymphatic, T-cell activator, vulnerary, anti-viral effect by stimulating immune response.

Uses

Skin disorders, ulcer of tongue, mouth, gums, tonsils, throat (mouth wash and gargle); duodenal and gastric ulcer, systemic Candida, especially useful for infections of upper respiratory tract.

·        In general, may be used widely and safely.

Yarrow (Achillea millefolium)

Actions

Diaphoretic, hypotensive, astringent, diuretic, antiseptic, anti-catarrhal, hepatic, stimulant, tonic, emmenogogue, anti-inflammatory, anti-spasmodic, haemostatic, anti-scorbutic, anti-pyretic, anti-rheumatic; a gentle relaxant.

Uses

·        Is one of the best diaphoretic herbs and is a standard remedy for aiding the body to deal with fevers.

·        It lowers blood pressure due to a dilation of the peripheral vessels.

·        Stimulates the digestion and tones the blood vessels.

·        Urinary antiseptic – indicated for infections.

·        Excellent healer of wounds.

·        Specific in thrombotic conditions associated with high blood pressure – prevents blood clots.

·        Used internally and externally for a wide range of conditions.

·        Dry skin and absent perspiration.

·        Haemorrhage of mucous surfaces – nosebleed.

Contraindications:  Large doses may cause headache.  Not used during pregnancy.

 

Elder (Sambucus nigra)

Actions (Flowers)

Diaphoretic, anti-catarrhal, pectoral, anti-inflammation, laxative, emollient skin care product, diuretic, expectorant.

Uses

Common cold, flu, chills, early stages of fevers with dry skin and raised temperature, nasal catarrh, sinusitis, tonsillitis, inflammation of mouth, throat and trachea (mouth wash and gargle), night sweats, croup (combine with equal parts Coltsfoot), eyestrain, conjunctivitis, eye twitching – cotton pads soaked in cold Elder tea apply to closed lids (patient lying down).

·        The Elder Tree is a veritable medicine chest by itself.

·        Leaves are used for bruises, sprains, wounds and chilblains.

·        Useful ointment (leaves) for tumors.

·        Flowers are ideal treatment of colds and flu, indicated in any catarrhal condition; inflammation of the upper respiratory tract such as hay fever and sinusitis; catarrhal deafness responds well.

 

Boneset (Eupatorium perfoliatum)

Actions

Febrifuge, diaphoretic, bitter tonic, laxative, immune stimulant, aperient, anti-spasmodic, anti-catarrhal, bitter diuretic, emetic.

Uses

Keynote:  Children’s fevers, promotes heavy sweating to reduce a raised temperature and eliminate toxins via the skin.  Anti-spasmodic to the respiratory organs.

Fever, “ache-all-over”, influenza, acute pain in the bones, fractures, to promote healing of broken bones, bronchitis, malaria.

·        Skin diseases which accompany children’s fevers (measles, chicken pox).

·        Reported to be anti-neoplastic.

·        Perhaps best remedy for the relief of the associated symptoms that accompany influenza.

·        Speedily relieves the aches and pains as well as aid the body dealing with any fever that is present.

·        Helps clear upper respiratory tract of mucous congestion.

·        Its mild aperient activity will help clear the body of any build-up of waste and ease constipation.

·        May be used safely for any fever and also as a general cleansing agent.

·        It may provide symptomatic aid in the treatment of muscular rheumatism.

 

Horehound (White) (Marrubium vulgare)

Actions

Stimulating expectorant, anti-spasmodic, bitter digestive, vulnerary, pectoral stimulant, diaphoretic, sedative, amphoteric, diuretic.

Uses

Keynote:  Chest

Chronic gall bladder disease, malaria, hepatitis.

·        A valuable plant in the treatment of bronchitis where there is a non-productive cough.

·        Combines the action of relaxing the smooth muscles of the bronchus whilst promoting mucous production and thus expectoration.

·        Beneficial in the treatment of whooping cough.

·        Bitter action stimulates the flow and secretion of bile from the gall blander and thus aids digestion.

 

HEADACHE TEA

Meadowsweet (Filipendula ulmaria)

Actions

Antacid, antiseptic, diuretic, hepatic, mild urinary analgesic, diaphoretic, anti-ulcer, anti-coagulant, anti-rheumatic, anti-inflammatory, stomachic, anti-emetic, astringent, aromatic.

Uses

Heartburn, hyperacidity, gastric and peptic ulcer, reduces fever and relieves pain of rheumatism in muscles and joints, liver disorder, cystitis, oedema, urinary stone.

·        Calming influence in an overactive digestive system.

·        One of the best digestive remedies.

·        Protects and soothes mucous membranes of digestive tract.

·        Reduces excess acidity and eases nausea.

·        Aspirin effect (salicylic acid) on blood vessels.

·        Headaches – pain killing properties and anti-inflammatory re blood vessels.

Caution:  if aspirin allergy.

 

Passion Flower (Passiflora incarnate)

Actions

Hypnotic, vasodilator, anti-spasmodic, mild sedative and analgesic without leaving depression.  Hypotensive.  Tranquilliser.  Central Nervous System relaxant.  Strengthens the heart muscle.

Uses

Keynote:  General relaxant.

Sleeplessness due to mental restlessness. Nervous excitability, over-active brain, hyperactive children, neuralgia, twitching of limbs, constrictive headache.

·        Herb of choice for treating insomnia.

·        Aids transition into restful sleep without any narcotic hangover.

·        Used as an anti-spasmodic re Parkinson’s disease, seizures, hysteria.

·        Very effective for nerve pain re neuralgia and viral infections such as shingles.

·        Asthma – where much spasmodic activity especially when associated with tension.

Contraindications:  Use low doses in pregnancy.

 

Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis)

Actions

Anti-bacterial, anti-depressant, anti-spasmodic, antiseptic, circulatory tonic, stimulant, diuretic, sedative.

Uses

·        Flatulent dyspepsia, headache or depression associated with debility.

·        Externally used to treat muscular pain, sciatica and neuralgia.

·        Circulatory and nervine stimulant.

·        Toning and calming effect on the digestion, therefore good for psychological tension.

·        Migraine headache or those from high blood pressure.

·        Aids function of the liver.

·        Strengthens blood vessels by decreasing capillary fragility and permeability.

 

Feverfew (Tanacetum parthenium)

Actions

Anti-migraine, anti-rheumatic, febrifuge, bitter, carminative, tranquilliser, diuretic, anti-spasmodic, laxative, vermifuge, anti-thrombotic, vasodilator, anti-inflammatory.

Uses

Protection against clot formation.  Meniere’s disease, vertigo; painful, absent or irregular menstruation, psoriasis; inflammatory rheumatism, arthritis.

·        Migraine preventative.

·        Best taken as fresh leaf (eaten) or cold tea of dried herb.  Less effective if subjected to heat.

Contraindications:  Not used in pregnancy or by women on the contraceptive pill.  Allergic effects (rare): mouth ulcer, sore tongue, skin rash.

 

Chamomile (Matricaria recutita)

Actions

Excellent gentle sedative, anti-spasmodic, carminative, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antiseptic, vulnerary, aromatic, bitter, diaphoretic, nervine, sedative, tonic, anti-microbial.

Uses

Peptic ulcers, Candida, anxiety, insomnia, indigestion, inflammations, PMS.

Contraindications:  Rare contact skin allergy.

 

IMMUNE SUPPORT TEA

Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis)
