Your blood is your river of life. The health of your blood is critical. It is the chief neutralizing agent for bacteria and toxic wastes. Many diseases are the result of blood toxins. The three blood cleansing systems are the liver, the kidneys and the lymph glands. To stay healthy, we need to keep these cleansing systems in good working order.
There are several detoxification and cleansing herbs available. For the herb of the month, I have chosen Burdock Root, one of the most powerful and reliable blood tonics. It is used as a specific in all blood cleansing and detoxification combinations.
Burdock Root (Arctium lappa)
Part Used: Root
Effective Forms: Tincture, Tea, Capsules
Burdock Root is an important anti-inflammatory herb. It is useful as part of a wider treatment for rheumatic complaints, especially where they are associated with psoriasis. It may be used for arthritis, gout and rheumatism to excrete uric acids.
As an alterative or adaptogen herb, Burdock Root will restore body functions and vitality by correcting and improving blood composition. It supports and stimulates the liver, gall bladder and spleen and is used to also stimulate and cleanse the lymphatic system.
As a bitter, it will stimulate and tone the digestive system to produce healthful counteractive juices and secretions, such as bile.
As a diuretic, Burdock Root stimulates kidney and bladder activity thereby increasing the flow of urine.
Burdock Root is also a laxative and is considered a hypoglycemic herb; an herb with the ability to lower blood sugar levels.
As a diaphoretic, it will induce increased perspiration, a process of internal cleansing. Toxic wastes are eliminated via the pores of the skin thus assisting kidney function.
In general, Burdock Root will move the body to a state of health, removing such indicators of systemic imbalance as skin problems and dandruff.
